From 64 farm families to a postwar boomtown
Southgate's first recorded settler, Pierre Michel Campau, arrived in 1795, and the area stayed a farming community for well over a century — on record with roughly 64 farm families at one point. Incorporation followed a petition to the Wayne County Board of Supervisors in November 1955, a favorable referendum in October 1956, and a successful charter on October 8, 1958. Population growth mirrored that suburban wave almost exactly: under 2,000 residents in 1940, 10,000 by 1950, 29,404 by 1960, and 33,723 by 1970.
